Although I usually write about people and events in El Paso, Luis and his work aren’t complete strangers to El Paso. Besides I think Luis and his art are an exception! Since Las Cruces is one of our sister cities I said why not? I met Luis about 10 years ago during a sales call. I’ve always admired his various art styles. As a person and artist, Luis, who’s loved art since he was a toddler, is very open-minded and humble. He isn’t afraid to try new forms of art on different objects or participate in non-traditional art concepts. Luis does face painting and air brush tattoos at special occasions. He designs center pieces, logos and banners for weddings. He also paints party and wedding favors if clients desire them.
Aside from canvas paintings and airbrush art on vehicles, Luis also creates beautiful art on other objects such as spray paint cans, t-shirts, pillows, pieces of metal, motorcycles/helmets and more. You name what you want and Luis will come through. Luis says traveling around the world has at times inspired his art. “In Italy the masters’ work from the 15th century are nothing short of phenomenal skill. The art, history, culture and people are also inspiring.” “Japan was inspiring as well. All of the places I’ve been nationally and internationally are.”
Luis works at his own studio, Luis Navarro Airbrush Studio Art Gallery, 401 North Mesilla Street in Las Cruces. He opened up shop in 2005. When asked how people hear of his work, he says mostly by word of mouth. His social media web sites have also helped him get his name out there and make sales. Luis doesn’t mind selling art on a worldwide level. When the California native isn’t too busy, he participates in area art shows and projects customers request at their home. He mostly creates home murals for children’s rooms. He once painted a customer’s dome-shaped ceiling with a Vegas theme featuring palm trees. Luis studied illustration and art at The Art Institute of California and the Art Center College of Design. He says he enjoys living in Las Cruces because it’s a chill place to work. It also gives him more time to explore the planet, he said.
A common theme Luis creates art of is Alice in Wonderland. He says the story and characters are bizarre and intriguing to him.
Luis also creates Children’s air brush t-shirts
