Good review by my friend, Ryan. Check out his writing and latest projects!
Stars:
Miles Teller as Andrew Nieman
J.K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher
Writer/Director: Damien Chazelle
Blood, sweat, tears and dedication! These are the images that are conjured up in Whiplash.
The movie opens with Andrew Nieman(Miles Teller), a first year music student, diligently banging away at his drum kit. Then in comes Terence Fletcher(J.K. Simmons)… the music teacher from hell!
Fletcher is quite infamous throughout the Shaffer Conservatory of Music. The students regard him as a force to be reckoned with. Fear and humiliation are the two teaching techniques that Fletcher relies on to motivate his students.
Andrew joins Fletcher’s jazz ensemble and is quickly pushed beyond his mental, physical and musical breaking point.
J.K. Simmons won an Oscar for his performance and I must admit it is well deserved.
If you are a musician, like me, or have an affinity for movies about musicians then I’d highly recommend Whiplash.
