Thank you to Gwin from Seek the Best Blog for nominating me for the Blogger Recognition Award. Gwin blogs about music, her life and so much more! I really enjoy her weekly “My Jams” blog posts. She includes a story from her life with music from the year the story took place. Check out/follow her blog if you aren’t already!
The rules of this award are:
- Explain how and why you started this blog.
- Offer advice to new bloggers.
- Nominate other bloggers for the award.
I started Life of an El Paso Woman on February 25, 2015. I’ve been writing stories and poetry since I was 6 years old. When I was in first grade, one of my stories won first place in a school wide writing contest. Even though I took a five-year break from writing in 2010, I’m now back at it! Before my writing break, I wrote for newspapers and magazines for about six years. I worked as a reporter and editor at my college newspaper between 2002 and 2004. I was on my high school’s newspaper and yearbook staff. I’d also write in journals when I was a child and teenager.
Before starting this blog, I started writing for my childhood friend Ryan Loera’s blog. He asked me to contribute blog posts and I said yes. After writing for Ryan’s blog for awhile, I decided to do my own blog. I’ve enjoyed blogging for SO many reasons! So far: I’ve met lots of other bloggers from around the world. I’ve learned about different foods, cultures, music, etc. I’ve also worked on several freelance writing projects for publications and marketing companies. I eventually plan on writing a book. I hope I’ll be finished by the time I’m 40. Lol. In less than two months I’m turning 35! Ahh!
The advice I’d offer new bloggers is to be yourself when you’re blogging. Nobody else has the same voice as you. There’s been times when I’ve been hesitant to blog about certain issues but I do it anyway. It usually turns out better than I thought. Take time to read other blogs and/or publications as much as possible. Reading other people’s work helps you improve your writing. Other blogs might also inspire you to learn and/or write about the same or similar topic. If a blogger’s idea inspires to write your own post, link the original post to yours. Also, if you read something by another blogger you really like, leave a sincere comment about it. Join social media sites like Facebook and Twitter so that others can also read your work.
I’m nominating the following bloggers for this award. They may or may not participate.
You’re most welcome 🙂

Hi there Izrael! Thank you for your comment! I’m sure there’s a lot of other great tips out there too. These are the ones that have worked for me.

Thanks for the kind words Lisa! I love your blog too. It’s always interesting to see what you’re talking about.
You have a very extensive background as a writer/editor. I am so impressed! Frankly, that is what I wanted to do when I was in high school but somehow I get led away from it. You know how that is. I guess better late than never applies.
Unlike you, I am looking close ahead at 50 so I wanted to revisit my old dreams before I get too old.
At least I can say I did it!
As always, I enjoyed being here and you know I’ll be back.
