The Book of Life

Maria (Zoe Saldana), Joaquin (Channing Tatum) and Manolo (Diego Luna).

Hi everyone! I hope your Wednesday is going well! I recently had the chance to watch the children’s movie “The Book of Life” from 2014. These last few days have been a perfect time to watch it because of the Halloween and Day of the Dead festivities taking place but…it’s actually a good time to watch the movie anytime. I really enjoyed the story and beautiful colors used throughout the movie. I wouldn’t recommend it for children under 8 years old. They might get scared of the skeletons and calaveras (skulls) in the underworld. Also, children under 8 might eventually get bored and restless.

A few children go on a school field trip but end up taking a trip into the underworld with ‘the tour guide.’ I don’t want to give away spoilers so I won’t reveal who the tour guide really is. The tour guide tells the children the true story and meaning of Day of the Dead. The story/underworld they travel to takes place in San Angel, Mexico. Two boys, Manolo and Joaquin are in love with the same girl, Maria. They both want to marry her. Maria truly only loves one of them. “The Book of Life” features the voices of several well-known celebrities like Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Cheech Marin, Ice Cube, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo, Placido Domingo, Gabriel Iglesias and several others. Guillermo del Toro helped produce the movie. Wikipedia says “The Book of Life” received a Golden Globe nomination for best animated feature film. The movie is available for rent or sale on YouTube, Amazon Prime and others . I give the movie an 8.5 out 10.

  1. Hi Keith! I think I’ve seen that commercial before! They’re drawing on a Surface. The Surface is really cool, my boyfriend has one. “Nightmare Before Christmas” is a classic! This movie is great because it explains the meaning of Day of the Dead in great detail. The color and graphics are awesome too. I think the movie was sort of underrated.

  2. Lisa, there is a great commercial for Microsoft by the graphic artist creators of this movie, where they show how they used the product to design this movie. Very cool. Thanks for sharing, as I have not seen this one. Thus far, my favorite Halloween movie is “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
