Hi everyone! I hope your Tuesday is going well! This morning I felt like listening to 80’s music on YouTube. If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, you already know I’m a hopeless romantic. I always have been and I always will be. I never wanted to admit I liked this song until I heard it later on in life. It was sort of one of those guilty pleasure types of songs in the past. I’m no longer ashamed to admit I blast this song on the radio whenever it comes out on a local radio station or Pandora.
Today I’m taking you back to 1985 with Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away.” The song was written by Italian DJ Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock for the movie “Top Gun.” I still enjoy watching “Top Gun” whenever I get the chance. Besides the 80’s, “Top Gun” takes me back to my Navy ROTC days in high school. We always watched this movie in class. Although I didn’t end up joining the Air Force after graduating from college, (this is one of my biggest regrets in life!) I had some great memories of being in ROTC in high school and college. By the way, Happy Veterans Day to my fellow bloggers and loved ones who served or continue to serve in the U.S. military. Thank you for your service. I apologize I’m late with that. Getting back to the song…
“Take My Breath Away” won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1986. The song peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 100. It also topped the charts in Canada, the U.K., The Netherlands and Belgium. Jessica Simpson even has her own version of the song. To be honest, I don’t really care for her version. I think the song lyrics are beautiful so I included them in the post. What do you think of this song? What were you doing in 1985 and 1986? Have a great day, everyone and I’ll see you soon! I’m working on a lot of freelance projects so it might be a few days…
Watching every motion
In my foolish lover’s game
On this endless ocean
Finally lovers know no shame
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
Take my breath away
Take my breath away
Watching I keep waiting
Still anticipating love
Never hesitating
To become the fated ones
Turning and returning
To some secret place to hide
Watching in slow motion
As you turn to me and say
Take my breath away
Through the hourglass I saw you
In time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you
And turned to hear you say
If only for today
I am unafraid
Take my breath away
Take my breath away
Watching every motion
In this foolish lover’s game
Haunted by the notion
Somewhere there’s a love in flames
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn my way and say
Take my breath away
Take my breath away
Take my breath away
Take my breath away
Oh wow! I’m really curious about the rest of their music!

I read somewhere that they were actually surprised by the huge success of “Take My Breath Away,” but felt it didn’t really represent their music. They got to the point where they hated performing it in their concerts.

I thought they were more of a one hit wonder band. 😁

Not a big fan, but I did like some of their other hits, like “No More Words,” that had more of a pop/new wave sound.

I don’t think I’ve heard any other songs by Berlin. I’ll look for them on YouTube. Besides this song, were you a fan of their music?

I’ve loved “Take My Breath Away” from the moment I first heard it way back in 1986. It’s a gorgeous anthem, and was a departure from Berlin’s usual music style.

It is very very corny… and yet… who doesn’t want to feel like that, or have someone feel that way about you? Thanks for so bravely sharing : ) G

That’s a wonderful song for a Romantic Tuesday, Lisa! Great choice. I loved the movie and the whole soundtrack. But this one has become a classic love song!

The 80s were my selfish/self-centered years…I was young and recently out of a boys home…I quit a dead end job, etc…drifting seemed cool then
